Climate change is the defining crisis of our time and countries across the globe are facing countless consequences in the form of catastrophes like floods in Pakistan, heatwaves in India, hurricanes in the US and the list goes on and on.

As our planet faces unprecedented levels of global warming, it's more important than ever that we take action towards achieving a net-zero carbon footprint. But what does "Net Zero" actually mean? And how can we get there as individuals, businesses, and communities?

Net zero is a term used to describe a balance between the amount of greenhouse gas emissions released into the atmosphere and emissions that are removed from the atmosphere. It is a goal for many countries and businesses to achieve carbon neutrality, meaning that the net emissions from their operations and products are zero. By achieving net zero, we can mitigate the effects of climate change and create a healthier and safer living environment for future generations.

India’s stance on Net Zero:

India has ambitious plans to reach net zero emissions by the year 2070 and is continuously working towards transforming the energy landscape of the country with significant initiatives.

Having said that, India is the world's third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases faces and has its own challenges like dependence on coal, lack of funding, etc.

So what will help India accelerate its drive to net zero? Here are some actions that are imperative to walk the path to sustainability.

1. Increase Renewable Energy Capacity: India can significantly reduce its emissions by increasing the amount of renewable energy it produces. This could be achieved by investing in wind, solar, hydroelectricity, biomass and other clean energy sources. Additionally, the government could incentivize investments in renewable energy sources to increase the transition to renewable energy. Viability gap funding for new and upcoming technologies including Green Hydrogen, Offshore Wind and other cutting-edge applications will be essential to ensure fast scale-up and deployment.

2. Improve Energy Efficiency: The country can also reduce emissions by improving energy efficiency. Energy Efficiency measures can be quickly and easily deployed, with attractive ROI on both financial and environmental metrics.Incorporating advanced technologies including Energy Storage and Demand Response can fine-tune the consumption profile of heavy consumers, shifting demand to hours when Renewable Energy is available. This provides much-needed resilience to the Power Grid and can defer expensive capacity expansions for the grid operators.

3. Growth in investments: The renewable energy market has seen impressive growth in the past years. Investing and holding the stocks of renewable-energy-based companies can pay handsome returns in the future and promote the development of the Clean Energy economy in the country.

4. Increase Use of Electric Vehicles: India can look at the green future by promoting the use of electric vehicles. Rapid electrification for development and focusing on green electrification will make India achieve our emissions targets faster. Decarbonising the transportation value chain can have a huge impact on our environment, remove harmful toxins from the air we breathe, and improve our Energy security by reducing import of foreign fuels.

5. Better Policy framework:  A strong and effective policy framework is imperative to give a clear sectoral direction and targets for polluting sectors. A stable regulatory environment is critical in order to attract foreign investments into the space, as most large-scale Renewable Energy assets take 24-36 months to develop and operate for 25-40 year timelines.

6. State and local level climate finance: Develop climate finance opportunities for states as most states do not have a dedicated climate fund to support the implementation of state-level net zero targets. Supporting sourcing of power from Renewable Energy -rich states will promote increasing RE adoption.

While the country does have some roadblocks that come in the way of its ultimate goals, India is surely breaking all obstacles in tackling climate change and finding unique ways to reach its net zero targets.
